Getting Organized for HITEC Toronto

22 June 2017
I have attended HITEC now for several years, as both an exhibitor and an attendee. Regardless of my role there, I have learned one valuable lesson: take a vacation after to catch up on sleep! I know that is not realistic, but if my day-to-day job could stop for a week after to allow me to sort through all of the business cards and collateral I collected, not to mention the overflow of emails that came in while at the show, I would not dread the post-HITEC “hangover.”

Why HITEC Toronto Is Important

22 June 2017
It sounds like one of those essays you had to write in school: “what I did on my summer vacation,” “what extracurricular activities mean to me.” It also sounds blindingly obvious – of course HITEC Toronto is important. After all, it is by far the world’s largest and oldest hospitality technology exposition and conference brand. HITEC Toronto is also historically significant, being the first-ever HITEC North America event to be held outside of the United States. #HITECtor will take center stage from June 26-29, anchoring a trilogy of international events in 2017 that include the debut of HITEC Amsterdam and HITEC Dubai. So, HITEC is clearly a big deal. But why?

Hospitality Technology Pioneers Recognized with Quinquennial HFTP Award of Merit

13 June 2017
Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP(r)) is proud to announce the honorees Keith Gruen, Hiroo Ichii and Dr. Ravi Mehrota as the 2017 Hospitality Technology Award of Merit recipients. The three individuals, chosen for his/her unique contribution to hospitality technology, will be recognized at the Opening Keynote of the 45th Annual Hospitality Industry Technology Exposition and Conference (HITEC(r)) in Toronto, Ontario Canada this month. The Technology Award of Merit is given every five years at HITEC, and was presented in 2002, 2007 and 2012. HFTP created the Technology Award of Merit to recognize hospitality technology pioneers who have made a significant innovation or breakthrough that established a path for others in hospitality technology. Recipients are selected by members of HFTP's International Hospitality Technology Hall of Fame, a group of industry professionals who have been recognized for their influence on the industry.Keith Gruen was recognized for his work in developing the early, widely-adopted PMS system, Fidelio. He was a co-developer for the software that was initially written to manage opera company bookings in Munich, and which developed into a full-fledged PMS that they named Fidelio, the title of Beethoven's only opera. The system broke new ground by introducing color screens, PC networks, user-friendly menus, overlapping windows, easily configurable screens and reports, and a graphical room rack and floorplan. Fidelio was acquired by Micros in 1995, and became the defacto standard system for many major hotel chains. Gruen turned his focus to the venture capital sector with success, but inevitably made his way back to hospitality where he has been involved in next generation hotel systems. He is currently CEO at ysura, a life sciences CRM, as well as a board member at Hetras and advisor for Apaleo, two hospitality technology companies.Hiroo Ichii was recognized for his work in developing ground-breaking communication networks for the hospitality environment. Ichii started as a software engineer and then moved to global network system sales support for enterprise communications and managed projects throughout Southeast Asia including Singapore, Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Sri-Lanka and India. Working with numerous major hotel brands, Ichii oversaw the installation of next-generation IP phone systems for guest rooms and operations. After 36 years with NEC Corporation, Ichii recently announced his retirement, but still remains as an advisor for NEC Solution Innovators, Ltd.Dr. Ravi Mehrotra is currently president, founder and chief scientist at IDeaS Revenue Solutions, and was recognized for his leadership in the field of predictive analytics, forecasting and dynamic price optimization. Since founding IDeaS in 1989, Mehrotra has worked tirelessly to both strengthen and expand hotel revenue management as a science, and revenue management systems as a technology, to assist hotels in achieving their preferred mix of rate, occupancy and RevPAR. He has recognized and detailed concepts and techniques that are now fundamental to hotel revenue management.Previous HFTP Award of Merit winners include: Roger Lane, CHAE (2002); Richard Maloney (2002); Dietmar Muller-Elmau (2002); John Pignataro (2002); Robert Sanford (2002); Joyce Christmas (2007); William (Bill) Duncan (2007); Ed Hollinshead (2007); Joseph Marko (2007); Bill Sullivan, CHTP (2007); The Hon. Exclusive Interview: Dual Award Winner Hyre Talks Entrepreneur 20X (E20X)

25 May 2017
In June 2015, Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP®), debuted its Entrepreneur 20X (E20X) innovation pitch competition, designed for hospitality technology startups, for the first time at the Hospitality Industry Technology Exposition and Conference (HITEC®) – the world’s largest and oldest hospitality technology exposition and conference brand. Rapidly gaining popularity after its introduction at HITEC Austin, E20X has become a reoccurring feature at HITEC. In 2017, HFTP expanded E20X globally with its first European feature at HITEC Amsterdam in March and will be an upcoming feature at HITEC Toronto in June.

HFTP Supports Hospitality Technology Startups with Entrepreneur 20X Event

24 May 2017
In June 2015, Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP), debuted its Entrepreneur 20X (E20X) innovation pitch competition for hospitality technology startups at HITEC - the Hospitality Industry Technology Exposition and Conference.NB This is a viewpoint by Jessica Blankenship, public relations manager for HFTP.E20X was an instant success, and this year HFTP launched the feature in Europe at HITEC Amsterdam in March. It will also be a part of HITEC Toronto in June.E20X allows ambitious unfunded entrepreneurs to present their business to HITEC attendees as well as a panel of expert judges comprising hospitality CIOs, angel investors, serial entrepreneurs and industry insiders. The selected startups then compete for two awards: the E20X Judges Award and the E20X People's Startup Award. The E20X Judges Award, or grand prize, is determined immediately following the competition by the judge's panel; the startup deemed "most innovative" takes home a trophy and $5,000.The E20X People's Startup Award, or crowd favorite, is selected by conference attendees via the HITEC 2017 app.At the Amsterdam event, Canada-based event staffing startup Hyre won both awards. Its CEO Eropa Stein, said: "It was such an honor to win both awards. The E20X Judge's Award, in a way, validated our business model while The People's Startup Award proved customers wanted our solution and accepted our product. We are very much looking forward to HITEC Toronto - our home base."Hyre will be joined in Toronto by an impressive roster of startups, highlighting tech-based innovations for guestrooms bookings, meetings, mobile, security and much more.Stein and other previous E20X award winners - 2016 E20X People's Startup Award winner Alex Cammarano, CEO and co-founder at Daylighted, and 2016 E20X Judge's Award winner David Temple, CEO and co-founder at Hello Scout - reflected on their E20X experience, as well as shared thoughts and advice on the overall event in an interview with HFTP.What was the inspiration behind your startup?Alex Cammarano: "We decided to work with galleries to bring the art experience to where people go, allowing anyone to be immersed in the creativity of the local scene without changing their habits....[Daylighted] helps the artistic community, the hotel experience, and the general public. Hotels get to showcase beautiful art at no cost, artists get free exposure, and people can discover local artists when they travel."Eropa Stein: "I observed the daily inefficiencies of the event staffing industry caused by obsolete practices....Hence, the development of a novel business concept - one that would assist in connecting event staff with event organizers without a staffing agency, and ameliorate many of the inefficiencies within the industry - was required. My solution was that of an online platform which would address this gap in the market...[and] revolutionize the event staffing industry."David Temple: "My co-founder and I published a newsletter about traveling off-the-beaten path in San Francisco. As we expanded, people would ask if they could just text with us instead. So we started a service to let traveler's text with local experts. In time, we found that hotels wanted to offer the service to their guests as well."What was the biggest obstacle you faced in the time between concept and E20X?Eropa Stein: "First clients are always tricky to onboard....[but] onboarding a very well-known client [is] a bit trickier. We had to have a positive reputation before any big fish took us seriously."David Temple: "To many hotels, getting approval and launching a new product in one to two months feels very fast. But as a startup with limited cash in the bank, it can feel like an eternity."What was the overall experience like for you and your company?Alex Cammarano: "Very positive. We met with major players in the industry and with potential advisors, partners, and last but not least, new customers. ....The quality of that show, and our exposure from the E20X competition made it our most successful show so far."Eropa Stein: "It is rare to get the attention of so many industry professionals and decision makers at once. Personally, [E20X] helped establish myself as an expert in hospitality staffing. For Hyre, HITEC helped us expand our professional network, and create long lasting relationships."Read Full Article>

Toronto - HITEC 2017 - Welcome to Canada!!

10 May 2017
Written By: Steven BronkenAs a Canadian in the hospitality industry, I am beyond elated that one of the biggest shows in hospitality is coming to Canada!! HITEC is a little over a month away and Toronto will prove to be an excellent venue!I have always been a proponent of bringing people north of the border, which is evident by two previous HTNG events in both Halifax, NS and St. John's NFLD (pic below from Signal Hill, NFLD - HTNG Insight Meeting - August 2016).For many in the hospitality industry, Canada is the untouched frontier. Many of us have travelled to all the main hubs in the US (several, several times), so much so that Toronto is going to be a very nice change of pace for everyone. With this in mind, I wanted to pass along a few key tidbits (or timbits) of information to my American Colleagues to help them with their visit north this June.Getting Here! Toronto is a great city, but suffers as many cities do from large issues with traffic. In 2015 Toronto had the worst traffic in Canada and the 47th worst in the world. With this in mind, leave extra time for travel. Toronto has Uber, Taxis, Lyft and other forms of transit........... however traffic and delays are common so be prepared. Your trip from Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to downtown will cost you between $60 & $130 Canadian and take you between 45 minutes and an hour (on a good day) with a distance of 17.97 miles. If possible, land at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ), which lands right downtown on an island a short ferry ride to downtown. Additionally, YTZ is not undergoing a major runway construction project, so you are less likely to get delayed as at YYZ.The Weather! Despite what you have heard about Canada, you can leave your parka, toque (i.e. knitted winter cap) and winter gloves behind. Current forecasted weather during HITEC should range from a high of 25' to a low of 12' (Ha! Welcome to Canada! This is celsius............ in Farenheit you are looking at a balmy 77'F & 53.6'F). This is perfect walking around and patio weather..............at least for a Canadian! The Beer! Being north of the border, you are bound to experience a little bit of our brew. Canada is known for our beer and Canadians are known for enjoying beer......... a perfect combination. This brings us back to an all time question for the ages: "is Canadian beer really stronger?" According to websites (link included), the average "normal" beer has just a slightly higher alcohol content than American beer, with a range of 4.0% to 6.1% alcohol by volume (ABV) as compared to America's 4.1% to 5.9% ABV. There also appear to be more popular Canadian beers with an ABV over 5% than popular American beers in that range. All in all, Canadian beer is excellent, and there are some great choices...... ask me in person and I will give you plenty of recommendations!Conversions, Conversions, Conversions....... In Canada, you are going to need a few good conversion tools to calculate the difference in distance, temperature and dollar value. You can download an all in one converter here that will cover all these items for you.Tim's / Timmie's / Tim Horton's - Yes, if you need it, Canada has Starbucks to give you that daily fix. However, while in Canada, why not enjoy one of the Canadian local favorites! At Tim Horton's you won't find your Iced, Haff Caff, Ristretto, Venti, 4-Pump, Sugar Free, Cinnamon, Dolce Soy Skinny Latte (whatever the heck that is) but you will get an excellent, no nonsense coffee. Coffee here is simple, with the usual types being Black / single-single / double-double / triple-triple (with each number representing first sugar then cream). A complete guide to ordering the perfect Tim's coffee can be found here. The People! - Yes, you will find the people in Canada very, very friendly........... and history has proven that there is a good chance we know that other Canadian you know (this has happened time over time to both myself as well as many other people I know). Please remember however that Toronto is also the 4th largest city in North America (after Mexico City, NY NY, and LA), and therefore not everyone will be looking out for your best interests........ and "No - Tim Horton's does not have a valet" despite what someone tells you.HITEC is bound to be an excellent show and an excellent venue, and I for one am super excited to welcome you all to Canada! Remember bring your passport, your thirst for knowledge, brew and a good time................ and if you have a chance, stop into our booth #535 and say "Hello!"Read Full Article>

Dispatches from HFTP Global: CHTA Disruptive 2017 Innovation and Technology Expo

9 May 2017
This is the second time I have attended a China Hospitality Technology Alliance (CHTA) event. Last month, I attended the CHTA Disruptive 2017 Innovation and Technology Expo from April 26-28, 2017 located at the Marriott QianJiang, HangZhou in Hangzhou, China. Featured exhibitors, impressive talks and discussions on heated topics contributed to a successful exhibition in the beautiful city. First introduced by Clayton M. Christensen in 1995, “disruptive innovation” – the event’s concept – is an innovation that provides different values and significantly affects the existing market. This might be the reason why the organizer chose this theme.

But the amendment's passage was not the end of the fight, and the battle over the past six months has included high-profile advocates, governmental figures and administrations and a swell of grassroots supporters. Lost in the protracted conflict is how, exactly, the new medical marijuana law will affect the workplace, and more specifically, employer rights. Although it is still unclear how Amendment 2 will operate once it becomes law, Florida can look to states that were earlier adopters of medical marijuana and find some clarity in how its employers should proceed so that they are safely in compliance. To help clear the air of smoke and uncertainty, Gregory Hearing, a Shareholder at Thompson, Sizemore, Gonzalez and Hearing, P.A., in Tampa, will give tips and guidelines for employers so that they understand how Amendment 2 may change the workplace.Learn More>
