HFTP's HITEC Amsterdam High Pre-registration Count Illustrates Hospitality Vitality - Stakeholders' Support for the Industry

22 March 2017
With the 600+ pre-registered participants for next week's inaugural HITEC Amsterdam, Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP(r)) is interpreting the strong interest as a sign of vitality for the hospitality industry and its stakeholders. In 2017, HFTP expanded its stakes in its 45-year Hospitality Industry Technology Exposition and Conference (HITEC), by adding two boutique events in hospitality-strong regions to complement the larger, North American HITEC that runs annually in June. The first of three HITECs in 2017 is HITEC Amsterdam, March 28-30 at the RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre, with pre-registration already exceeding the expected attendance numbers. This sign of popularity, plus the fact that the exhibit hall sold out in 72 hours when space was made available last June, demonstrates the need for a regional, concentrated forum to discuss the ins-and-outs of hospitality technology via networking, education and exhibits. This year HFTP will also produce HITEC Toronto, June 26-29 and HITEC Dubai, November 14-15, in partnership with Naseba."While we expected that HITEC Amsterdam would be a big draw, it is already exceeding our wildest expectations," said HFTP CEO Frank Wolfe, CAE. "Because we are a non-profit organization, our successes are attributable to the industry experts who volunteer their expertise and time to help plan the program, resulting in valuable knowledge-sharing that leads to industry improvement. HFTP is also fortunate to have the support of many industry suppliers and sponsors, some who have been with HFTP through name changes, mergers and acquisitions for the HITEC brand's 45 years."The HITEC Amsterdam education program is a topical slate of sessions planned and presented by a renowned, respected, volunteer group of industry experts led by HITEC Amsterdam Chair, Carson Booth, CHTP and Vice Chair, Derek Wood. Sessions will cover important topics such as: EU data privacy legislation, disruptive technologies, e-payments, service bus technologies, technology for profit and more. In addition the program starts with a keynote from BBC Radio broadcaster Dr. Aleks Krotoski and caps off with a keynote by future-scenario planner Woody Wade.Wolfe goes on to say, "HFTP has been entrusted by the industry as one of the most reliable sources for finding out how technology and finance impact our enterprises. HFTP's volunteers are among the very best and brightest the industry has to offer who are extremely passionate about the industry. It is that passion that drives such positive responses."HITEC Amsterdam will also host an exhibit hall full of companies offering some of the best technology products and services ever assembled in Europe under one roof. In support of the inaugural event, Platinum Sponsors CNN, Samsung, NEC and Novility are helping to provide participants special experiences.HFTP's Entrepreneur 20X program, the hospitality industry's startup pitch competition, is a bonus event that will be held on the afternoon of March 28. The startups compete for a cash prize, two separate awards and the opportunity to innovate the hospitality industry. The event is exclusively sponsored by HoReCa.digital. HoReCa.digital is a newly established business unit of METRO that focuses on helping independent restaurants, hotels and caterers via innovative digital tools and solutions to improve their businesses. Focused on digital opportunities in the hospitality sector, HoReCa.digital features METRO Accelerator's highly selective mentor program for technology startups across the entire chain of Hospitality and Retail. Also co-located with HITEC Amsterdam next week are two critical hospitality events produced by HFTP industry allies, Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International (HSMAI) Region Europe and Hotel Technology Next Generation (HTNG). HFTP puts HITEC on a World Stage with Two New Events

1 March 2017
While most in the industry are familiar with Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals' (HFTP) HITEC event, which takes place in a different North American city every year (this year's conference will take place in Toronto in June), the association is expanding globally this year with two inaugural conferences: HITEC Amsterdam will be held next month, with HITEC Dubai following in the fall.Frank Wolfe, HFTP's CEO, noted that HITEC's growth follows HFTP's expansion throughout the world. The driving force behind the decision was the association's members and stakeholders. "For more than a decade, we have had many requests to proceed with this growth. However, as a nonprofit organization, we wanted to make sure that we did not take anything away from our grassroots members by expanding," he said.As part of its strategic planning, HFTP has grown incrementally, increasing its investments to allow controlled growth without compromising quality and service, said Wolfe. "HFTP made a concerted effort to do so by establishing relationships with like-minded associations and organizations in Asia and Europe," he continued. HFTP has co-located smaller conferences with established events, partnered on industry resources and established HFTP chapters outside of North America. In 2015, HFTP had one of its largest-attended HITECs here in the city where HFTP is headquartered, which Wolfe said demonstrated the continued popularity of the event. "Following up, HFTP leadership decided that we were finally in a position to take the leap," he said. "When we announced HITEC Amsterdam last year at HITEC New Orleans, we sold out the exhibit space immediately."And that response led to HITEC Dubai. "After our HITEC Amsterdam educational program grew such a respected group of volunteers and the exhibit space sold out in 72 hours, we decided we were really onto something and proceeded to plan HITEC Dubai," said Wolfe, noting that HFTP has a very small staff and its successes "come from industry experts who have a passion for the industry and volunteer their expertise to make the industry better."Read full Hotel Business article>

Dispatches from HFTP Global: CMAA World Conference on Club Management and Club Business Expo

28 February 2017
I recently attended and represented HFTP at the CMAA 90th World Conference on Club Management and Club Business Expo that took place from February 7–11, 2017 in Orlando, Florida USA. The event was held at the Orlando World Center Marriott – an amazing Orlando resort, just across the freeway of MouseTown, where each night magically comes to an end with a 9:00 p.m. firework show. With a perfect view from my 14th-floor balcony at my hotel, I enjoyed watching the firework performance nightly.

Another Fun Sharing Session at Hong Kong Polytechnic University

23 February 2017
I met a few of these students at the HCAA AGM and Annual Dinner late last year and felt they could do with some help in how to prepare a decent CV and apply for jobs in hotels, so offered to organise a small session for them.We met this week with this very charming group of students who are all studying Hotel & Tourism Management at HK's Polytechnic University and are part of HFTP's Student Chapter there. I was delighted to be joined by two old friends from The Hong Kong & Shanghai Hotels Group and Elsie Leung gave a terrific PPT presentation addressing all the key areas that framed our discussions. Together we were able to give them lots of great insights, information and hopefully also some encouragement as they go about trying to land their first ful-time job. Good luck to you all!Everyone needs a little help when starting out - ok, we can't help everyone, but surely we need to do what we can for those who come across our path.Full Article>HFTP Hong Kong Polytechnic University Student Chapter>

Ransomware: Sorting Out the Details

21 February 2017
With the recent stories of guests getting locked out of hotel rooms – or, in some reports, guests being locked in hotel rooms – it is hard to sort the fact from the fiction. A few weeks ago an Austrian hotel’s computer system was attacked by hackers. After all the dust settled, the truth about the attack was revealed and early reports of guests being held hostage in their hotel rooms was unfounded. The hackers were not interested in holding guests hostage, but were interested in disrupting the hotels business and holding the computer systems hostage. The hackers knew that the property management system is at the heart of the hotel’s operation, and without it the hotel would be crippled and unable to operate.
